Letter to Mrs. Phyllis Schlafly

Dear Mrs. Schlafly,

Please forgive me for being so formal. It has been over 45 years since I visited with you and Eleanor at the Cardinal Mindszenty headquarters in St. Louis, when I called you by your first name – Phyllis. I have followed you both over the years via the Internet, newspapers and books. The fact that you have become icons in the conservative movement and your service for the cause of freedom has been outstanding.

If my memory serves me correctly, you had heard me give a radio interview on the 400-radio station network of Dean Manion who was a law professor at Notre Dame at that time and a key member of the John Birch Society. I had given a speech to the society’s national convention for Robert Welsh in Boston before Mr. Manion invited me for a radio interview on his show.

It was both an enjoyable challenge and a thrill to travel the country for the Cardinal Mindszenty Foundation speaking on subjects like “The Techniques of Soviet Propaganda” and “Americanism vs. Communism”.

I remember speaking in different churches, schools, and community centers all over the country and meeting some of the greatest patriotic people possible. I also remember with the help of 100 conservatives bringing Senator Barry Goldwater into Toledo, OH in the summer of 1964 to give a presidential speech to hundreds of people and to raise money to bring him into Toledo. We sold hundreds of books such as “None Dare Call it Treason”, by John Stormer, J. Edgar Hoover’s, “Masters of Deceit” and especially your best seller, “A Choice but not an Echo”.

And while Goldwater lost, because of your leadership abilities and many others’, the conservative movement was born, which eventually lead to Ronald Regan and with the help of Pope John Paul II and the millions of individuals that offered up their redemptive suffering under communism while doing prayer and penance (Rosary) for the conversion of Russia fulfilling the blessed Mother’s Fatima message of 1917.

I know we now face another huge threat regarding the Obama presidency, which I address in my blog, but again if we love Jesus, and do His will, then God willing, we will all meet in heaven someday and be happy with God and each other for all eternity. (See Fr. Corapi’s summary in my blog of how we win the final war.) We thank the Lord, You, and all those God-fearing conservatives for saving us from a nuclear war with the Soviet Union.

Because of my three illnesses: diabetes, heart and Parkinson, I will not be able to attend your September 12 meeting in Nashville, but will continue to offer up my redemptive suffering for the salvation of souls and send a donation to Bobby Patray for a youth scholarship.
